Back to previous page What makes Cabo so spectacular? .......When you dive in Cabo, you are sure to find something exciting and unusual.

Cabo San Lucas is one of the best places in the world for scuba diving and snorkeling. You can find 30% of all the total marine species in the world here! That means not only a lot of fish, but also a huge variety of species.

How is this possible? To understand, we have to go millions of years back when the Baja peninsula wasn't separated from the rest of the continent. The San Andreas fault caused a huge earthquake separating Baja from the rest of the Mexican land mass. Lucky for us divers, it also created the Sea of Cortez.

Because Baja is now separated from the rest of Mexico, it also means the species here have evolved differently. You will find many unusual types of cactus, fish, and entire eco-systems. For instance, Cabo Pulmo is the only living coral reef on the Pacific side of Mexico.

The Sea of Cortez is well protected from currents and winds from the north, it offers warmer waters and calmer water conditions than the Pacific Ocean, which is on on the west side of the Baja peninsula.

The Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean also have a bottom composition of great diversity. We go from passing shallow sandy bottoms, to rock and coral reefs, to nice deep walls that drop down all the way to 2000 feet deep. That makes Cabo San Lucas one of the deepest bays in the world. It is also why Pipin Ferreras, see www.freediving.net, the world champion free diver uses this bay to set his world records. It also makes for strong rip currents on the Pacific side so please do not swim there. Swimming on the Sea of Cortez side is fine. If in doubt, ask one of our friendly Dive Masters for information about where to snorkel and swim on your own.

Diving Conditions:

The land formation and dive site called "The Point" divides the two oceans and causes different dive conditions during the year. That is why in Cabo, you will never get tired of diving the same site many times.

During the winter, visibility is between 30-60 ft and the water temperature is around 60 degrees F. During this season (November-April) you might see friendly sea lions, manta rays, whale sharks, and maybe even a gray whale! Or take one of our excursions to La Paz or Gordo Banks where we search for schools of Hammer Head sharks and Whale Sharks.

In summer, the scenery and climate changes. Visibility is up to 100-120 ft and the temperature is around 90 degrees F. No wet suit is required here! During this time currents from the Sea of Cortez are stronger causing sub-tropical conditions. This means you will see all kinds of tropical fish, schooling tunas, jacks, and octopus!

So wherever and whenever you dive in Cabo, you are sure to find something exciting and unusual.
